This month, Just Poets member Roy Bent presents the life and works of Anna Akhmatova, one of the most important Russian poets of the twentieth century.
Rising to fame before the revolution, Akhmatova lived through the Tsarist era, befriended the painter Modigliani (we'll see some of his portraits of her), endured the Russian Revolution, the murder of her husband, the imprisonment of her son, and decades in which her past works were forbidden and her new writing had to be concealed from the authorities. The presentation covers the major events of her life as they unfolded and how they were reflected in her poetry. For several of her famous poems, we'll examine the same poem by different translators.
As usual, bring 8 copies of a poem you are working on for our group workshops that run after the program (from 3:00 to 4:00 pm).
The meeting is in the COP Conference Room, on the second floor of the Campus Center.
