JP Open Mic

  • Before Your Quiet Eyes 439 Monroe Avenue Rochester, NY, 14607 (map)

Come for another evening of poetry at Before Your Quiet Eyes bookstore. Our featured reader this month is Just Poet Bart White.

Bart gave his first public reading in 2012 after writing poems for nearly a decade. He joined Just Poets soon after and has served in its leadership for five years. He has helped create poetry events at high schools, cancer clinics, senior residences, rec centers, with Rochester’s LGBTQ and deaf communities and more. A native of Asheville, North Carolina, he grew up among storytellers and feels a strong affinity for narrative poetry. Bart has helped edit Le Mot Juste and two anthologies, Vigil for the Marcellus Shale, 12 Poets Opposing Hydraulic Fracturing, and Birdsong: poems in celebration of birds, both from FootHills. His 2014 chapbook, The Faces We Had As Children, was nominated for a Pushcart prize. His latest publication pairs photos and short poems from his “give a poem” project, and is titled, “in the next hour.”

Don't forget to bring some poems of your own to share during the open mic portion of the event. Usually readers are allowed 1-3 poems, for a total of three minutes.

The series is curated by Just Poet David Yockel.
