Program: The Truth of Imagination and Wonder, lead by Rachael McKibbens
“There Is No Doubt Fiction Makes a Better Job of The Truth.” — Doris May Lessing
In this course we will look at poems from Martín Espada, Airea D. Matthews and Alberto Ríos in an effort to recognize the differing, often fantastical, strategies employed to tell a story honestly. Through generative writing exercises, writers will discover how personal, subjective and even fictional accounts are important complements to historical fact, showing how they equally contribute to a person’s and/or culture’s sense of identity. Story and myth are thus revalued as legitimate forms of cultural knowledge and sociopolitical reporting.
